Securing access to resources for the success of Black farmers in the Greater Sacramento, CA Region
After 2 years of effort, Ujamaa Farmer Collective has acquired 22 acres of farmland near Woodland, California, to further our mission of securing access to resources for the success of Black farmers in the Sacramento, CA region. Thanks to the generous support of the State Budget Act (AB 179) through the State of California Department of Parks and Recreation, in which we received a grant for the acquisition of farmland.

As we conclude the celebration of Black History Month (Feb 1 – Mar 1), CDFA recognizes the Ujamaa Farmer Collective of Yolo County, which recently acquired 22 acres in Woodland. CDFA Secretary Karen Ross toured the property and visited with key members of the collective. The Secretary highlighted the hard work happening to support and uplift Black farmers, recognizing their invaluable role in shaping agriculture, as well as acknowledge and continue working towards healing and addressing the historical injustices facing Black farmers. For reference, and mentioned in the video - BIPOC stands for Black, Indigenous, and people of color.
Each day, Nathaniel Brown tends to his land. He says he fell in love with gardening at a young age. "When I'm able to see what I've created, it is very rewarding," Brown said. "I was definitely inspired by my grandma to get out and start planting. She really taught me gardening on a bigger scale. She had about a quarter-acre garden."
We are fundraising to continue to build upon a multi-year and multi-generational collective effort to provide farmers of color equitable opportunities.
